June/July May-28-2009
I am very excited about June and July.  Let me tell you why.  At the end of June, I will be attending the national spina bifida conference in Florida.  I hope that this will be a memorable experience for my family, and also yours.  If you are able to attend, just send me a note and I would be happy to try to meet you while we are there.  If you are not able to go to the conference, I hope to be able to take pictures and post content that brings the conference to you.

Congratulations to Daniel, the winner of our photo essay contest.  I hope everyone takes a moment to enjoy his slideshow on the homepage.  We will be posting another contest in June that will run through August.  I'm still ironing out details, but the prize will be a free pair of customized crutches from EveryKid Mobility.

Our forum needs to grow and become more active.  Over the next few weeks I will be appointing moderators to help answer questions and keep conversations going.  If you have posted in the past and were discouraged at the length of time it took to get a reply, check back with us again in the near future.  We should be picking up the pace.

Lifestyle Accelerator is running a small ad campaign on Google.  We want to spread the word about our site and encourage more people to participate in the community.  If you see one of our ads, please don't click on it.  That subtracts from the number of times people are allowed to view our ad.  Since you already know where we are- we need to save the clicks for newcomers.

Keep sending in articles, content, science news, pictures, etc.  Instead of doing one huge update every month, I am going to try to continually update things every few days.  We'll keep bigger articles up for a couple of months, but I hope to add new little tidbits at least every week.

Thumbs Up To "Sled Hockey and the Cincinnati Icebreakers"!

"Sled hockey players body-check their disabilities at the door."

This article in The Enquirer features Chris Starrmann- a clerk in Butler County's Clerk of Courts office.  Staarmann plays for the Icebreakers, and he has spina bifida.

If you know of someone or something
that deserves a thumbs up for a positive
portrayal of spina bifida or disability in
the media please let us know so we can
feature them in our thumbs up box.

To find out more about clinical studies that are seeking patients with spina bifida, you can view this page from the National Institute of Health.  Just choose "spina bifida" as your condition of   interest and click "go".
